Purpose
The Watershed Security Fund (WSF) envisions a future where thriving watersheds and the natural flow of water are of the utmost importance, and water is highly valued as the sacred source of life for all living beings. WSF supports initiatives that prioritize the health of our waterways, centre First Nations rights and knowledge, and reinforce lasting partnerships and relationships.
-
The First Nations Water Caucus–with the First Nations Fisheries Council of BC acting as its secretariat–and the Real Estate Foundation of BC are providing interim stewardship for the Watershed Security Fund.
Through innovative approaches and strategic partnerships, the WSF aims to address the urgent and long-term needs of watersheds while upholding our commitment to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).
-
Watershed security is a shared responsibility, requiring everyone within the watershed to actively contribute to its care and preservation.
The efforts to realize the Watershed Security Fund have been ongoing for years, with a broad network of water champions and strong public support.
On March 6, 2023, the Province of British Columbia and the B.C.-First Nations Water Table jointly announced an initial $100-million investment from the Province of B.C. to establish the creation of an independent Watershed Security Fund.
The First Nations Water Caucus–with the First Nations Fisheries Council of BC acting as its secretariat–and the Real Estate Foundation of BC are providing interim stewardship for the Watershed Security Fund until it is transferred to an independent, enduring, permanent entity to oversee, manage, and grow the fund over the long term. The Province of B.C. currently acts in an advisory role.
-
The WSF grants program supports projects and initiatives that advance the resiliency of our watersheds while adhering to a framework of reconciliation and pursuing collaborative relationships to steward the restoration and conservation of healthy watersheds for generations to come.
Process
Guided by the communications strategy and collaborating with team members, we planned and delivered the activities outlined in the 2025-2026 workplan, including developing new frameworks and guidelines, publishing storytelling materials, and fostering engagement opportunities to connect with partners, organizations, and watershed security champions.
Deliverables
Print Publications
-
We included at least two presentations on each event, one explaining regenerative agriculture principles and the other explaining soil health and how it impacts the entire ecosystem, including planetary and human health. Participants also learned about soil composition, nutrients and biology, soil resiliency, and carbon storage.
WSF Reception at UBCM
-
During the farm tours, farmers took participants into their fields and showed how the concepts explained during the presentations apply in real life. The farmers also dug holes in the ground to allow participants to look at the soil structure, touch it, smell it, analyze their richness in organic matter and compare observations.
Promotional Materials
-
All events included a farm-to-table meal featuring ingredients produced at the farm and prepared by local chefs, reinforcing a sense of community. The dinner allowed the participants to network and ask questions in an informal setting.
Presentations, Web and Socials
-
We handed paper notebooks in both languages during the events (English / French) with a description of Regeneration Canada’s mission and the 10 regenerative principles promoted by the organization, along with additional blank pages for note-taking during the events.
We also created amplification packages to share with partnering organizations to help spread the word about the campaign.
