Creativity Lab Report #5: Breathe, be good and drink cold press juice

Lately, we've been feeling like we're thriving in chaos! Even though we miss seeing our friends and attending events, the restrictions have helped us stay focused on our personal habits and business goals without distractions! We feel like we've accomplished lots and can't wait to be able to share it in person with family and friends soon!

Our cookbook photoshoots are rolling! We created recap blogs and videos from our moving day and the first week of photoshoots. We started working on the second chapter of the book, all dedicated to Oats!

If any of you know any small-scale organic oat farmers in the area, please let us know, as we'd like to share some farmer stories too!

We will focus on making bi-weekly announcements through our blog, newsletter and youtube, so you can be part of the creative journey! We'd love to get your feedback along the way! Find the links to the “Shauna and Alie Show” below (that’s how we like to call it).

It's ok to be good and not great

In a society that celebrates overnight success, hacks and quick fixes, we praise the slow learners, the little working bees, and the ones that meticulously take little steps every day instead of giant leaps every blue moon. True greatness is not being in the spotlight a couple of times; it is consistently showing up every single day.  “Not always trying so damn hard to be great isn’t just the path to being happier; it’s also the path to getting better. The less you want to be happy, the happier you’ll be. The less you need to perform better, the better you’ll perform.”

Book: Breath

"There are as many ways to breathe as foods to eat." Since industrialization, the way we breathe has been getting worst. Roughly 90% of us breathe incorrectly, and about 40% of the human population suffers from nasal obstruction, becoming mouth breathers, which leads to a list of chronic diseases. How we breathe can affect the size and function of our lungs, weight, mood, immune system and longevity.

It is the most vital exchange we have with our environment. We could go for days without food or water, but only minutes without air, and yet, we ignore it and take it for granted. Biologists don't prioritize studying breath, and doctors don't pay enough attention to it.

Breath by James Nestor explores evolution, medical history, biochemistry, physiology, physics and endurance of breath. On average, regular people breathe about 670 million times in a lifetime; we highly recommend that you spend some of those breaths reading this book!

PS: We are the kind of people who reads book notes, so we followed up with other books like the Wim Hof Method. Even though we might not recommend reading the entire book as it gets very repetitive, we do recommend including some of his practices into your day, like doing breathwork and cold showers. Yes! We've been doing cold showers for the past month, and it has been energizing! If you want to dig even deeper, check Human: The World Within and the episode on Pulse to learn more about how the breath is linked to the cardiovascular system.

Local Biz

We love it when things come around full circle! From being a brand ambassador for Pulp and Press Juice Co. (Alie’s first job when she moved to Canada in 2015) to getting hired to take product shots for their expansion into the US market! We're big fans of their cold press juices and the people behind the brand, and it felt great to be back, even if just for a few days! Check the full story here: Full “Juicy” Circle.
